Herschede Grandfather Clock. Model 89. Serial # 45723 1928 era mahogany clock:
$4800.00

4/22 Revised the price.
Hi, For your interest is my 1928-1929 era Herschede Model 89 Grandfather Clock. I bought this clock when I was a teenager nearly 40 years ago at an estate sale. It was in good general condition except for the tubes which were a mis-mash of cracked originals and poor replacements. My general plan was to get the clock running so in early 2001 I contacted R&M Imports which was the company that bought Herschede Manufacturing’s inventory out of receivership. I purchased a set of 9 Herschede 1 3/8” tubular chimes from them to have for the clock. I was told the original chimes for my era clock were drilled and hung with shoe string so I had the nubs ground off and hanging holes drilled. The few cracked originals I had were drilled and didn’t have the nubs. Separately I purchased ‘How to repair Herschede Tubular Bell Clocks’ by Steven Conover and a compilation book on Herschede Clocks giving a selection from 4 catalogs from c1904-1927. These manuals as well as the R&M Imports catalog will be included with the sale.I started looking over the material I realized I was way over my head and chose to do nothing on it until I could afford to have a competent guy work on it. That day hasn’t come so I’ve decided to part with the clock.
A while ago I did some research on the clock serial number (45,723) and I believe its manufacture dates to some time around 1928-29 I think the impressed numbers on the back panel of the clock may hint to the movement being a No # 3 three train movement playing Whittingham, Cantebury and Westminster on 9 tubes. The are selector toggles on the top right and left for the 3 tunes and Chime or silent running. There is also a toggle for strike and silent midway down the left edge of the dial. The 89 denotes the model number. The 1927 catalog gives the dimentsions: 82” height, 22” Width and 15” depth. The final number 894 is a mystery to me but probably indicates the model number coupled with a face number or other option. I’m no clock expert so forgive my guesswork. With the exception of the ‘newer’ Herschede chimes, I believe the rest of the clock is original. The included Faux Mercury vials Pendulum was an option offered in the 1927 catalog. The clock comes with it’s original weights all in good unpolished condition and the original winding key and case key are included.
Case condition: The case is in good overall condition with some minor dings and repairs. At one time the left side flutted column and capital was hit which may have dislodged it. It caused a breakage of the lip of the capital which someone repaired poorly and damaged some veneer on the interior left of the semicircular arch. The veneer and lip repair are both acceptable and could be left as is. There is a small wood loss to the very back edge of the pediment. This could be easily repaired by a craftsman or left as is. It’s hardly noticeable. One of the back feet is loose but I’ve always left it as is. The back access panel to the case is long gone. It would have probably been mahogany like the rest of the case but t looks like someone once affixed silk over the hole and held it there with thumb tacks. Once upon a time I had the clock running for a bit to test it. I never installed the new tubes because the leather hammer pads were very worn or gone so I didn’t want to damage them. I tied back the hammers to see it the movement would chime when activated. It ‘chimed’ without the tubes in place. The movement of the clock will require a cleaning at minimum and may require an overhaul. Because only allows for 12 pictures I’ve included what I can. I am happy to supply more pictures or information as requested if you send a message.
This is a great clock and a part of American-Ohio clock making history. I am sorry to have to part with it. I’m downsizing and don’t have the room for all my projects.
