Monumental J.E. Caldwell Tall Case Grandfather Clock Carved Mahogany Case 8 day:
$5900.00

This is a unique opportunity to own a piece of Pennsylvania History. This clock was made in Philadelphia at the end of the 19th Century and was presented to John F. Gwinner in 1903. JOHN FREDERICK GWINNER, a leading financier and highly respected citizen of Easton, Pennsylvania, is a great-grandson of Frederick Gwinner, who came to this country in I758. The information about Mr. Gwinner along with the specific documentation for this clock was published on page 118 of the Book: Historic Homes and Institutions and Genealogical and Personal ..., Volume 1 By John Woolf Jordan, Edgar Moore Green, George Taylor Ettinger. You can find it on line now as it was digitized by Google and is now available in electronic form as a Google Book. Quoting from the book: On December 25, I903, the Knights Templar and other members of the Masonic fraternity who reside in Easton, Pennsylvania, assembled in the Masonic Temple to drink a toast to the health of the grand commander of the grand commandery of the Knights Templar of the United States. At this assemblage Mr. Gwinner was presented with a beautiful \"grandfather’s clock,” his friends in the different Masonic bodies having waited until that morning to present to him their remembrance of the celebration of his golden anniversary, and also to show the esteem in which he is held. The clock was made at Caldwell\'s, in Philadelphia; the case is of mahogany, the dial has raised gold figures, and the large pendulum bears an appropriate inscription. This clock has been professionally serviced and the case has been cleaned and professionally French polished. It stands at 101 1/2\" tall and is an impressive piece of craftsmanship with incredible carved shell motif in the bonnet, waist door and base panel. There are full carved fluted columns with Corinthian capitals as well as very intricate panels in each side of the base. The clock rests on carved hairy paw feet. Both door locks are original and working and come with keys. The waist door retains the original beveled glass. The clock comes with a wonderful original pendulum and engraved bob with the inscription documented in the book. The brass finials are exceptional premium examples and original to the clock. The massive eight day brass movement is the best of its kind and is in excellent condition. The clock strikes on a beautiful, resonant cathedral gong and counts the hours. The engraved brass dial with silvered chapter ring and applied brass gilt decorated spandrels is in mint condition as is the moon wheel. The clock comes with the original winding crank as well.
