Navajo Coiled Ceremonial Wedding Basket by Mary Stanley, 6 1/4\" in Diameter.
This new basket is very well made with finer than usual stitches. It features a 6 point inner star with spirit release and a 12 points on the outer circle. It is finished with a herringbone stitch and measures 6 1/4\" in diameter x 1 5/8\" deep. Mary lives near Kayenta, Arizona.
These baskets are used in many Navajo ceremonies including weddings. They reflect Navajo life with the inner star representing the sacred mountain peaks and the outer ring representing the sacred deities. The red ring is the rainbow. Very few Navajos still make ceremonial baskets due to the taboos placed on basket making by Navajo medicine men so most baskets used are made by the Utes and traded to the Navajo..
