This is a VALCOM tone/rotary intercom primarily used with 1A2 telephone systems, although it could be used as a stand-alone intercom if wired correctly.
This unit provides a single path of voice communication for up to 36 stations (single line sets or key sets) and can ring the stations with their internal bell or an adjunct 10 or 18 vac buzzer. It generates a dial tone when a set is off hook and requires two digits to be dialed to signal the designated station. Pressing the star button re-rings the station and pressing the pound button establishes a new dial tone (recall).
This unit was mfg in 6-87 and his been on my shelf since that time era. I removed it from box for bench testing as I too wondered if shelf life was over. No, it isn't DOA, it works like a brand new one. I tested the voice path, the signal circuits and tone and rotary dialing. Everything works perfect.
I have installed these units for over forty years, some are that old and still working perfectly.
