The 24-port TRENDnet Gigabit Switch is perfect for increasing the available ports for additional computers, network storage devices, etc. NOTE: This is an 'unmanaged' switch, meaning that it does not supply or control IP addresses. If you are looking for a switch to connect to your network immediately after your cable or DSL modem, this is NOT what you want. There is no configuration needed or required. Plug and play. For my installation, I have my cable modem, then my ASUS wireless router, THEN this switch connected to one of the ports on the back of the ASUS. The ASUS is set for DHCP and dishes out the IP addresses to whatever is connected to the 4 ports in the back of it. Since this switch is connected to one of those ports, it now is capable of handing out IP addresses to whatever is connected to the other 23 available ports (1 port is used to connect to the ASUS). It features Auto-MDI/MDI-X so that you can plug in the uplink cable (the one going to your Internet source) to any of the ports and it will configure itself as an uplink port. No special crossover cable required. LED indicators tell you if the connection is running at gigabit speed (green) or slower (yellowish). The unit is a fan-less switch, so it's silent. The case is metal. Also note, most IT departments will not allow you to connect your own expansion switches at work...especially unmanaged switches. Please check with your IT department before purchasing for that purpose! This is a home/residential switch. No 'cons' that I can see. A good bargain for the money.Read full review

I've had these in my rack since they were new. No issues, no lockups, they just work. They are, however, getting long in the tooth. I wouldn't suggest these unless you're expanding a setup and want the same, or you can get them sooper-cheep. They do have trouble connecting to certain devices on short cables - the original Pi B is one such device. I assume that it's due to the switch turning off ports and regulating drive power based on cable length. There's something it didn't like about that device, and would cycle it on and off.

I had my 24 port managed switch go down after several years of use. I no longer needed a managed switch. This filled the bill. I used Trendnet years ago and never had any problems with them. Very good value.
