I have very limited experience with night vision. I have used generation 1 in the past and found it of very little use. I got to look through a gen 3(pvs 14) and it was astounding. Not having that much money to spend, I decided to try Sightmark's product. It is good. I can see pretty well without the infared light on. If you turn on the light, things in the foreground are lit so brightly that seeing objects further out is difficult. Best for open areas, not in woods.....unless you use a separate infared source. I prefer the 940nm which is invisible to the naked eye, the SightMark unit has an 850 nm on it so you can see red when it's on. If visibility doesn't matter, the light on the unit is good, just has the limitations I've already mentioned. The lens on this unit is good, but not great. The lens seems to be a little uneven in focus, in other words there are some abberations in the lens. They aren't that big, but if you're trying to see something small you need to move the unit around to find a 'sweet spot' to let you see the most clearly. I do like the magnification and the lens size, previously I returned a different unit because it couldn't collect enough light to make it useful. The controls are easy to reach. You have to be careful not to get your fingers in the way of the light at first, it's easy to do if you're not aware of what it looks like with the light on. Given it's reasonable price, I would recommend this unit to a friend.Read full review
If you can get your hands on one of these, for a good price, it's excellent as a budget gen 1 NV scope
