FOR SALE: Sophos XG 85w four-port Gigabit router/firewall running OPNsense.
The XG 85w model is out of support with the manufacturer since August 2022. This means that Sophos no longer provides software updates for these devices and the devices no longer work with Sophos services. With an alternative operating system, however, they still can work as commercial-grade routers and firewalls. So we repurposed this unit by installing OPNsense, an open-source operating system for the networking equipment.
To test the device and make port functions consistent with on-device labeling, we made a few changes to the initial OPNsense configuration. A detailed configuration note will be provided to the buyer. Alternatively, the buyer could simply reset the software to its initial state. Right now, configuration resembles that of a consumer-grade router (one WAN port, three remaining ports and the wireless subsystem bridged into a single LAN), but let us know if you need something else to fit your requirements.
The device runs on an Intel Atom E3805 processor (1.33 GHz, dual-core, AES-NI support) with 2 GB of RAM and a 8 GB eMMC storage device. Networking (four Gigabit ports) is handled by Realtek 8168/8111 network interface cards. To improve performance and stability of Realtek cards, we have installed the os-realtek-re package, which contains improves drivers developed by the OPNsense team. Wireless networking (N standard) is provided by a single Atheros AR938x card with two external antennas. To improve the longevity of the device, we installed the "nano" version of OPNsense, which is optimized to run "in-memory" and minimize writes to the eMMC storage.
The device is implemented in a desktop form factor. The case is all metal and exceptionally rigid.
The device is passively cooled and completely silent.
The device is in excellent physical condition (please review the photos). A power supply unit with a threaded coupling (no more accidental unplugging!) is included.
