Retro Compaq Presario 5050 PC, Celeron 333, 128MB, 10GB HD, CD, Windows 98 SE:
$150.50

Here is one of Compaq\'s Windows 98 home PCs which was designed to be cheap. It cost $1299 when it was released in late 1998 with an 8GB hard drive and 96MB of RAM. I have replaced the floppy drive, hard drive and CMOS battery, upgraded the RAM, removed the modem, added an ethernet card and a clean install of Windows 98SE with all necessary drivers. It is now ready to install your favorite applications from floppy diskette, CD, network, or from a USB drive.
Computer techs from the end of the last century will remember this model as a popular but poorly engineered design. Compaq used a small rocker switch in the back to turn power on or off, but many users kept punching the turquoise button placed up front and center, which was meant to put the computer to sleep or wake it up. When I managed a computer repair shop, I often announced to my employees, \"We got another Presario with a broken Moon button\" Also, the 5.25\" hard drive was prone to failure, and many users were frustrated trying to upgrade RAM (which requires removing the motherboard from the right side of the case).
This minitower is smaller than most, and it uses a 75W power supply. The motherboard uses Intel\'s 440LX chipset. The CPU is a Slot 1 Celeron running at 333 MHz. .The motherboard has threeexpansion slots: 1 ISA, 1 PCI, and anoher which takes either a PCI or ISA card. I filled one slot with a 3Com 3C905B-TX 10/100 ethernet card. The onboard ATI Rage LT Pro AGP graphics processor has 2MB of SGRAM, upgradeable to 4MB of video. Compaq soldered down 16MB of SDRAM to the motherboard but provided only one DIMM socket, which I filled with a 32MB DIMM, which is the highest capacity it will recognize. Compaq used an ESS 1869F Audio Drive chip for audio, with a joystick/MIDI port in the front and four audio jacks in the back. The motherboard also has one DB9 serial port, a parallel port, and two PS/2 ports in back, with two USB 1.1 ports in front. You can read more details about Compaq\'s motherboard at this replacement 10GB Samsung hard drive has a single partition which boots consistently into WIndows 98 SE. The replacement NEC 1.44MB floppy drive and the original 32X IDE CD ROM are still working as designed.
Buyer will receive the exact system pictured here, but without any keyboard, mouse, monitor, cables, documentation, or software (other than what comes with Windows 98 SE).
Local pickup in zip code 60438 is free. If you need this shipped, I do not add any fee for packing materials or handling. I ship promptly, and will package securely. I offer a 30 day return privilege, but return shipping is at the buyer\'s expense.
