Fiber-to-the-Home (FTTH) deployments have been generating great excitement amongst broadband users, promising amazing, consistent, high-speed, low-latency services. However, many FTTH deployments cannot reach or connect all customers within a deployment area, for several reasons including, expensive last-hop deployment costs, historical/architectural building preservation constraints, or complex Multi-Dwelling Unit (MDU) agreements.
In response to these challenges, operators around the world are adopting a Fiber Extension strategy to provide ultra-fast broadband, utilizing Gfast technology to deliver fiber speeds to dwellings over the last-hop copper infrastructure already in place.
This efficient and effective Fiber Extension strategy consists of a reverse-powered Distribution Point Unit (DPU), that is linked to the existing copper line, and powered by a self-installedin home Network Termination Device (NTD).

A reverse-powered DPU potentially servicing a number of different dwellings requires an AC power connection, but it also brings new opportunities to provide additional services to the end user – all wrapped in a simple, easy-to-install NTD.
Our NTDs power the DPU via the same copper pair connection used to deliver the ultra-fast broadband service.
Each NTD provides enough power to the DPU to support its own connection, even if there are no other NTDs connected. The DPU dynamically load balances, ensuring equitable power draw from connected NTDs.
Featuring the latest G.fast technology, and acting as a VDSL modem, a Casa Systems NTD minimizes interoperability challenges, while providing the end-user with a fantastic interruption-free user experience.
End-User installation
The NTD arrives at the end-user site as a packaged, off-the-shelf product with a descriptive, easy-to-read Quick Start Guide and color-coded ports and cables. This makes end-user installation quick and painless – removing the need for a technician to install the device.
No local or remote configuration of the NTD is required for service activation. Once connected and powered, the end-user’s ultra-fast broadband service is automatically enabled.
End-User Device Compatibility
New Fiber Extension deployments need the flexibility to be compatible with legacy, pre-existing end-user gateway devices as well as support upgrades to the very latest devices.
With Casa’s NTDs flexible design, the service provider and the end user can continue using their existing Residential Gateway (if present).
This allows the service provider to use their standard range of Ethernet-enabled gateways deployed for other access technologies.
