FOR SALE: pfSense four-port Gigabit wireless router/firewall on Sophos SG 105w hardware.
Sophos SG 105w is a commercial-grade router, firewall, and network security appliance. With stock operating system, it has been out of support since August 2022. We repurposed this device into a generalist wireless router and firewall by installing pfSense, an open-source operating system designed for networking equipment.
To test the unit and ensure its working condition, we made a few changes to the initial pfSense configuration. A detailed configuration note will be provided to the buyer. Alternatively, the buyer could simply reset pfSense to its initial state and start from scratch. Briefly, we have set up the port labeled WAN to be the WAN port and bridged the remaining three ports, as well as the wireless subsystem, into a single LAN.
If you would rather have this device with OPNsense or OpenWrt, let us know; we can definitely make it happen.
The device is implemented in a desktop form factor and has a sturdy all-metal case. It is passively cooled (fanless) and completely silent.
The unit runs on an Intel Atom E3826 processor (supports AES-NI crypto) with 2 GB of RAM and a 64 GB SSD. Wired networking is handled by a four-port Intel i211 Gigabit network card; the wireless network card is Qualcomm Atheros AR93xx.
In our estimation, this device is a good choice for a home, a home lab, or a small business.
The device is in very good physical condition (please review the photos; note that we are listing several identical devices, so the device pictured may or may not be the device you receive, although the photos are representative of the condition of all devices in the series). A power supply unit with threaded coupling (no more accidental unplugging!) is included.
UPDATE: We recently received some XG 105w units. Rather than list them separately, we added them to this listing. SG 105w and XG 105w are hardware-identical; the manufacturer distinguished them only because they shipped with different software. The only visible difference is the styling of the front panel (see the last photo). If you have a preference, check with us before buying; we may be out of your preferred option. If not, we will ship you whatever is on top of the stack. :)
