Using willow, cattail, and beargrass, weavers constructed baskets with black designs worked with a crawling desert vine called Devil’s Claw. Baskets were woven to carry food, water and possessions, and used as furniture, as shields and helmets, and to serve wine at the yearly saguaro wine festival. The Pima and Papago tribes are now known as the Akimel and Tohono O’odham. Their weavers produce modern baskets of beauty, elegance and strength.
